This time last year, I was travelling most days of the week to a course I was taking in the Liberties. I had more than one public transportation route to choose from - but no matter which Dublin Bus I hopped onto, at the end of the trip there was a bit of a walk to reach my destination. This gave me a chance to change up my commute regularly.
One of my favourite routes took me past Dublin Castle (and often through the Castle's Lower and Upper Yards). One sunny morning in early July, I saw signs of a location shoot, though at the time I had no idea what was being filmed.
With the classroom only ten minutes away, I decided to pop back for a closer look that lunchtime. Turns out the production was the RTÉ series based on the events of the Easter Rising, 'Rebellion'.
The five-part 1916 commemorative drama begins with the outbreak of World War I and shows how Irish nationalism came to the fore 'as seen through the eyes of a group of friends from Dublin, Belfast and London as they play roles in the narrative of Ireland's independence.'
With the series just about to complete a rebroadcast here in Ireland (the final part is airing on RTÉ One this Saturday), it has also been shown recently in America on Sundance TV and is available on Netflix worldwide (except here and in Finland). It's also been announced that a follow-up series set in the War of Independence has just been commissioned.
So for everyone close to home and worldwide who has already watched, is currently watching or is about to begin watching Rebellion...here's a few quick behind-the-scenes snaps. Enjoy!
